Checksum · free, in your browser
Get the SHA-256 checksum of a file
A SHA-256 checksum is a 64-character fingerprint of a file. Drop the file to get it, then copy it into a report, a release note or a message.
How to do it
- Drop the file on the page, or choose it.
- SHA-256 is chosen in Algorithm. The hash appears under Hashes.
- Choose Copy hash to put it on the clipboard.
Your files stay on this device: Checksum runs in your browser, with no upload, no account and no watermark.
Questions
Is my file uploaded to compute the hash?
No. The browser's own Web Crypto reads the file on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Why is SHA-256 the default?
It is the hash most software publishers use today. SHA-1 is offered only to match older published hashes.
Can I get MD5?
No. Browsers do not offer MD5 in Web Crypto, and it is not safe for checking files. Ask the publisher for a SHA-256 hash.
