Getting started with Notes

Notes keeps your notes in notebooks and folders, written in Markdown with a live preview. Every note is saved to Files in this browser, and nothing is uploaded.

Open Notes

Write your first note

Each change is saved about half a second after you stop typing. The top left says Saving…, then Saved to Files.

  1. Choose New note at the top, or press Ctrl+Alt+N.
  2. Type a title where it says Untitled.
  3. Add tags in the box below it, separated by commas.
  4. Write the note in Markdown in the box on the left. The preview on the right updates as you type.

Write, Split or Preview

Use the Write, Split and Preview buttons to see just the Markdown, both side by side, or just the finished note. Ctrl+Alt+V cycles through them.

Markdown covers headings, bold and italic, lists and checklists, quotes, code, links and tables. A quote that starts with [!NOTE], [!TIP] or [!WARNING] shows as a callout.

Insert blocks

Choose Insert block for a Heading, Table…, Video link…, Image…, Code block…, Checklist…, Quote…, Divider, Callout or Link…. Each block is added as Markdown where the cursor is.

An image is stored inside the note (up to 2 MB). A video link becomes a card with a link to the video; nothing plays inside the note. Pasting a table from a web page or a spreadsheet turns it into a Markdown table.

Notebooks, folders and tags

Press F2 on a note, folder or notebook in the lists to rename it. Pin keeps a note at the top of the list.

  1. Choose New next to Notebooks to make a notebook, and give it a name.
  2. Choose New next to Folders to add a folder to the notebook you are in.
  3. Right-click a note for Pin to top, Rename…, Move to folder, Move to notebook, Export and Move to Trash….
  4. Choose a tag in the sidebar to see only the notes with it, or search the title, text and tags with the search box.

Export a note

Choose Export for Markdown (.md), HTML (.html), plain text (.txt), PDF (print view) or Word (.doc). PDF opens the print dialog; choose Save as PDF there.

The Export menu can also save the whole notebook as a ZIP of Markdown or HTML files.

Tip: Trash moves a note to the Files Trash, where you can restore it.
