Transcribe a video to text

Drop a recorded meeting, a lecture or a screen recording. Transcription takes the sound from the video and turns the speech into text, all on your device.

How to do it

  1. Open Transcription. The first time, press Get more… and confirm the download of the Whisper tiny model (about 40 MB). It is kept in your browser for next time.
  2. Drop the video on the page, or choose it. MP4, WebM and MOV work wherever your browser can decode their sound.
  3. Choose the Spoken language, or leave it on Detect, and press Transcribe.
  4. Correct the transcript in the text box. Turn on Show times to see where each part comes in the video.
  5. Download it as Text or Word, or press Open in Documents to keep editing it as a document.

Your files stay on this device: Transcription runs in your browser, with no upload, no account and no watermark.

Questions

Do I need to convert the video to MP3 first?

No. Drop the video itself. The sound is read from the file in your browser, and the picture is ignored.

Is the video uploaded?

No. The sound is read and transcribed in your browser. Only the Whisper model is downloaded, once, from Hugging Face, and then kept in your browser.

Can I get subtitles instead of plain text?

Yes. Choose Subtitles (.srt) or Web subtitles (.vtt) in the format list before you press Download. Subtitles keep the timing of each segment.

Why are some words wrong?

Whisper tiny is a small model, chosen so it runs in a browser. It can mishear names, jargon and speech over music or noise, so fix the text in the box before you save.
