Design a business card and get a print-ready PDF

Start from a front-and-back business card template set up the way printers want it: 3.5 × 2 in with a ⅛ in bleed. Add your name, logo and details, then send the PDF with crop marks to the print shop.

How to do it

1. Choose File > New from Template… and pick Business card.
2. Replace the text with the Type tool, and place your logo with File > Place….
3. Let backgrounds and colours run past the page edge into the bleed, so no white edge shows after cutting.
4. Choose Export PDF… with the Press quality (bleed + printer's marks) preset.
5. Send the PDF to your printer, or print it at home with Print….

For the European size, set the page to Business Card (EU) in Document Setup. Colours can be given as CMYK, and they are written to the PDF as CMYK.

Questions

What size is the card?

The template is the US size, 3.5 × 2 inches, with a ⅛ inch bleed. Business Card (EU) is also in Document Setup.

Will a print shop accept the PDF?

The PDF has the trim and bleed boxes, crop and bleed marks, and embedded fonts that printers ask for. Check your printer's own requirements too.

Can I use my own fonts?

Yes. Load a .ttf or .otf with Load Font File…, and Embed fonts (subset) puts it in the PDF.
