Log mileage and work out the claim

For each business trip, note where you went and why. Expenses multiplies the distance by your rate and records the claim as an expense, so it is in your books and your CSV.

Log a trip

How to do it

  1. Choose Mileage… (on the Expenses list, or in the File menu).
  2. Fill in the Date, From and To, and the Distance, one way. Tick There and back if you drove both ways.
  3. Pick the Unit (Kilometres or Miles) and type the Rate per unit, such as 0.45.
  4. Add the Purpose, check the amount To claim, and choose Record claim.

The rate and the unit are remembered on this device for the next trip. A mileage claim has no tax to reclaim, and shows in your expenses, the monthly summary and the CSV like any other expense.

Your files stay on this device: Expenses runs in your browser, with no upload, no account and no watermark.

Questions

What rate should I use?

Use the rate your tax authority or employer sets for business mileage; it changes by country and year. The app only multiplies the distance by the rate you type.

Does it work out the distance from a map?

No. Type the distance from your odometer or a route planner. Nothing is looked up online.

Can I export my mileage log?

Yes. Mileage claims are expenses, so Download CSV in Summary includes them, with the route and purpose in the description.
