Edit the text in a PDF

Fix a typo, a date or a name in a PDF without the original document. Click a line of text, type the new words, and download the corrected file.

How to do it

  1. Drop the PDF on the page and open the page you want to change.
  2. Turn on Edit text in place from the Edit menu (Ctrl+E). Choose Lines to change one line, or Paragraphs to rewrite a whole paragraph that wraps inside its frame.
  3. Click the text and type the new words. They take the same position, size and colour as the old ones.
  4. To take words out, select them and press Remove in the bar that appears over the selection.
  5. Use the Text, Whiteout and Image tools in Edit page to add new text, cover something or add a picture.
  6. Choose Download to save the edited PDF.

The old words are taken out of the page itself, so they are gone from the screen, print, search and copy, and the rest of the page stays where it was. Where that cannot be done safely, for example text inside a form or a font that cannot be measured, the old words are covered in the colour under them instead. The new text uses the same font family when it is installed or bundled, and otherwise the closest bundled family; the info line tells you which.

Questions

Does the edit change the text inside the PDF?

Yes, in most PDFs: the old words are removed from the page and the new ones are written in their place, so search and copy find the new text. In the few cases where that cannot be done, the old words are covered instead. On a page read by OCR the words in the hidden text layer are replaced too.

Will the new text match the font?

It is set at the same size and colour, in the same family when that font is available to the app, or the closest bundled one. The panel says which font is used.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

Run the OCR tool first so the page has a text layer, then edit the recognised words. Without OCR a scan is a picture, and you can only cover and add text.

Can I undo an edit?

Yes. Every change can be undone and redone until you download, and the original file is never changed.
