Redact a PDF

Black out names, numbers and addresses before you share a document. Applying the redactions removes what was under the boxes, so it cannot be copied back out.

How to do it

  1. Drop the PDF on the page and open the Redact tool.
  2. Choose Draw redaction boxes and drag over what must go, or use Find & redact for a word, a pattern or the presets (e-mail addresses, phone numbers, card numbers, ID numbers).
  3. Check the list under Marked for redaction and remove any mark you do not want.
  4. Choose Apply redactions and confirm. Tick the option to remove the document metadata too if you like.
  5. Choose Download to save the redacted PDF.

Each redacted page is redrawn as a picture with solid black boxes, so the hidden text is gone from the file rather than sitting under a shape. Pages without marks keep their text.

Questions

Is the redaction permanent?

Yes, in the file you download. Each redacted page becomes an image with black boxes burned in, so the text under them cannot be selected, searched or copied.

What happens to the rest of a redacted page?

Its text can no longer be selected, and form fields and comments on that page are flattened. Pages without redactions are not changed.

Can it find all e-mail addresses for me?

Yes. Find & redact has presets for e-mail addresses, phone numbers, card numbers and ID numbers, plus plain text and regular expressions.

Is the document uploaded?

No. Finding, marking and applying the redactions all happen in your browser.
