Reconcile your bank statement

Import the statement your bank gives you: CSV, OFX or QFX, QIF, camt.053 or MT940. Ledger matches each line to the entry in your books that moved the account by the same amount within five days, and shows what is still to explain.

Reconcile a statement

How to do it

  1. Download your statement from your online bank as CSV, OFX, QIF, camt.053 (XML) or MT940.
  2. In the Bank tab of Ledger, pick the Account (1010 Bank or 1000 Cash) and choose Import a statement…
  3. Lines that match an entry are marked Matched. The rest are To review.
  4. For money in that equals an open invoice, record it as that invoice's payment. For money out, pay a bill or choose Record as expense…
  5. Set aside anything that needs no entry. When Still to explain is zero, the account is reconciled.

Importing the same statement twice adds nothing, so you can import overlapping months. The file is read in your browser; your bank details never leave the device.

Your files stay on this device: Ledger runs in your browser, with no upload, no account and no watermark.

Questions

Which bank statement formats work?

OFX and QFX, QIF, ISO 20022 camt.053 and SWIFT MT940 are read as they are. For CSV: any CSV with a header row that has a date column and either an amount column or money in and money out columns. Common English, Swedish, German, Spanish and French column names are recognised.

Does it connect to my bank?

No. There is no bank connection: you download the CSV from your bank and import it. Nothing is sent anywhere.

What if a match is wrong?

Choose Unmatch on the line and record it another way. Set aside lines can be brought back with Bring back.
