Import an SIE file into your books

Moving from another accounting program? Its SIE export brings your chart of accounts, the opening balances and every voucher into Ledger, and it shows you the plan before anything is posted.

Open the Journal

How to do it

  1. Export an SIE file (type 4 for vouchers, or 1 to 3 for balances only) from your old program.
  2. In the Journal tab of Ledger choose Import SIE… and pick the file.
  3. Read the plan: the accounts that will be added, any account whose code is taken by another type here (it gets a free code, which you can change), names that differ, the opening balances and the vouchers.
  4. Choose Import. The summary says how many accounts were added and entries posted, and lists what was skipped and why.

Each voucher becomes one balanced journal entry with the voucher number and text as its memo, and the opening balances of the current year become one entry on its first day. Importing the same file again adds nothing. Account names already in your chart are only changed if you tick the box. Amounts in another currency than your books are converted at the stored rate on each date.

Your files stay on this device: Ledger runs in your browser, with no upload, no account and no watermark.

Questions

What if a voucher does not balance?

It is skipped and listed with the difference. The rest of the file is still imported.

What happens to accounts with five or six digits?

A sub-account such as 19301 joins its four-digit parent (1930) when that is the same type of account; otherwise it gets a free four-digit code, shown before you import.

Can I undo an import?

Posted entries are never changed or deleted in Ledger. Reverse an entry from the Journal tab to cancel it.
